When you’re a busy freelance creative, and a parent, it’s not always easy to get enough rest.
My brain doesn’t shut off when my head hits the pillow at night.. It replays upcoming deadlines, money worries, and school commitments.
My body’s exhausted, but my brain just won’t shut up.
I’ve found that doing a brain dump is the only thing that works for me.
It creates a space for your thoughts outside your head.
This trick signals to your nervous system that it’s safe to rest:
- Keep a notebook next to your bed, and write down everything that’s on your mind. Write and don’t worry about making mistakes.
- Write down the 3 most important things you need to do the next day. This tells your brain it can stop rehearsing.
- Write down 1 thing you’re grateful for, and 1 thing you handled well. This puts your brain in appreciation mode, which is calming.
- Close the notebook and tell yourself that your thoughts are safe on paper and your mind is free to rest.
A racing mind means you need better systems to process your day. This ritual will give you the inner peace you need to fall asleep.
